VIWMA Closes Road Near Old Cancryn School

The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority would like to inform the community about a temporary road closure set for Thursday, July 3, 2025, starting at 7:30 p.m. and lasting until further notice.

This closure is necessary to facilitate the installation of a bypass near the Veterans Drive Highway at the intersection of the former Addelita Cancryn Junior High School.

During this time, the eastbound lane will be narrowed to a single lane of traffic. Additionally, traffic flow between Judy Gomez Highway (Harwood Highway) and Veterans Drive will be restricted, allowing crews to safely work in the intersection.

The installation of this bypass is essential for rerouting influent water around the collapsed section of a 42-inch main sewer line that carries wastewater to the Cancryn Pump Station. This effort will help reduce wastewater levels within the collection system and mitigate overflows caused by the sewer line failure.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution in the area, as exposure to wastewater runoff can pose serious health risks due to the presence of harmful contaminants. Residents are advised to avoid areas showing signs of possible sewage discharge, including discolored water, strong odors, and any runoff near manholes, gutters, or drainage paths.

VIWMA crews will be actively working to restore operations as quickly and safely as possible. The Authority is asking both pedestrians and motorists to adhere to all traffic and safety controls in place.

We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding during this necessary repair effort.
