Woman Charged With DUI After Crashing Into Police Vehicle on St. Croix

Virgin Islands News

A woman was arrested Tuesday night after her car collided with a marked Virgin Islands Police Department unit on the Aloy “Wenty” Nielsen Bypass, the department announced.

According to a VIPD police report, the crash occurred around 8:53 p.m. Traffic Investigation Bureau officers identified the driver as Sarah Vasquez and noted “a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on her breath and on her person.”

The preliminary investigation found the police unit had been traveling north and had come to a complete stop on the bypass when Vasquez, driving westbound, turned left onto the roadway and struck the police vehicle in its lane. Both vehicles were damaged, police said.

Vasquez was administered the three Standardized Field Sobriety Tests — the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand — and failed all three, according to the report. She was arrested, processed, advised of her Miranda rights, and booked.

Her bail was set at $1,005. She faces charges of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and negligent driving. In lieu of bail, Vasquez surrendered her Virgin Islands driver’s license, the report stated.
