Sunset, Song, and Service: Healing Hands Cruise Raises Awareness and Hope

Virgin Islands News

Healing Hands Worldwide’s sold-out “All-White Sunset Sail Affair” aboard the Lady Lynsey catamaran last Saturday drew a crowd of elegantly dressed guests, who weren’t just there for the gourmet food, live music, and ocean breeze — they came to make a difference.

The annual event, now a signature fundraiser for the Virgin Islands-based nonprofit, helps fund free chemotherapy for uninsured breast cancer patients and scholarships for students in underserved communities in the USVI, Jamaica, and Ghana.

“This evening was nothing short of magical,” said Karen Nelson-Hughes, the organization’s executive director. “Every guest on board helped move our vision forward.”

That vision — of bridging the gap between need and care—is at the heart of Healing Hands Worldwide’s work. The cruise, held June 14, brought together supporters, sponsors, and community leaders in a setting that felt like celebration but served a deeper purpose. Onboard energy was high as local favorites Topp Notch Band and Jamaican recording artist Althea Hewitt got guests on their feet. As voices lifted in song and laughter echoed over the water, the message was clear: healing can start with connection.

For Dr. Erole McLean Hobdy, the organization’s founder, the evening was a milestone — not just in fundraising, but in momentum. “It was a powerful reminder of what happens when compassion meets action,” she said.

Adding to the night’s impact was an onboard art auction featuring the work of internationally renowned artist Doba Afolabi, whose vibrant African-inspired pieces led to three successful sales.

The event also spotlighted the generosity of corporate partners and local sponsors, including RED Hospitality & Leisure, Alpine Securities USVI, and community contributors like Lockhart Gardens Shopping Center and St. Thomas Radiology and Associates. Their support, organizers say, helps ensure that patients and students who would otherwise be left behind are given a fighting chance.

Healing Hands Worldwide plans to expand its programs and outreach in the coming year, with plans already in motion for the 2026 Sunset Sail Affair. Those interested in supporting or learning more can visit www.hhworldwide.org.

Because at the heart of the night wasn’t just a cruise — it was a cause.
