Sofia Swindell Sets New VI U20 Record

Virgin Islands News

Virgin Islands Track and Field member Sofia Swindell, a standout hurdler and recent graduate of The Lawrenceville School, delivered an impressive performance at the McNamara Last Chance National Qualifier held in Forestville, Maryland.

Competing in the 100m Hurdles, Swindell ran two strong rounds, continuing to represent Lawrenceville with pride. In the preliminary heats, she clocked a personal best of 13.80 seconds, securing second place in her heat and advancing to the finals.

Swindell elevated her performance in the final round, finishing second overall and shaving time off her prelims mark with a new Virgin Islands Under-20 record of 13.67 seconds. Her consistent improvement and competitive spirit were on full display as she closed out her high school season on a high note.

Looking ahead, Sofia will take her talents to the national stage at the New Balance Nationals, scheduled for June 20–22 in Philadelphia, PA. With momentum on her side and a record of steady progress, she is poised to make a strong showing among the nation’s top high school hurdlers.

Malique Smith

Virgin Islands Track and Field member Malique Smith, a seasoned 400m hurdler, delivered a strong performance at the 2025 Music City Track Carnival, held at the Ray Conn Sports Complex on the campus of Lee University.

Competing in the 400m Hurdles, Smith clocked a seasonal best time of 51.39 seconds, securing 4th place in both his heat and overall standings. His performance demonstrated consistency and competitiveness in a deep field of hurdlers at this high-profile meet.

The Music City Track Carnival continues to attract elite athletes from across the country, and Smith’s showing further cements his reputation as a formidable competitor in the event.

Mikaela Smith

Virgin Islands Track and Field member Mikaela Smith made a resilient return to competition at the 2025 Music City Track Carnival, held at the Ray Conn Sports Complex on the campus of Lee University.

Competing in the 800m, Smith clocked a time of 2:11.12, placing 6th in her heat in a highly competitive field. Her performance was especially inspiring, as it marked her first major race back after recovering from a recent bout of dengue fever—a serious illness that sidelined her training and racing schedule.

Despite the setback, Smith showed determination and grit, pushing through the two-lap race with strength and composure. Her return to form is a testament to her resilience and passion for the sport.

The Music City Track Carnival is known for attracting top-tier talent, and Mikaela’s participation adds to her growing experience on the national stage.

The Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation encourages all Virgin Islands athletes to register with the Federation. Registration with the VITFF is required to participate in the Eunice Bedminster Virgin Islands National Championships, which will take place on June 21 at the St. Croix Educational Complex Track and Field Facility.
