Michelle Smith, a standout freshman from the Virgin Islands representing the University of Georgia, delivered a commanding performance at the NCAA East Regional Championships, securing her place at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Competing in the 400-meter hurdles, Smith first dominated her preliminary heat on Thursday, May 29, winning with a time of 55.85 and advancing confidently to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinal round, she elevated her performance even further, placing first in a time of 55.22 and clocking the second-fastest time overall to punch her ticket to the national stage.
Smith’s qualification adds to the University of Georgia’s impressive showing at the East Regionals, where the women’s team secured multiple entries to the NCAA Championships.
Her achievement not only highlights her personal talent and determination but also marks a proud moment for the Virgin Islands, as she continues to represent her home on one of collegiate track and field’s biggest stages.
The NCAA Championships will be held in Eugene, Oregon, often referred to as “TrackTown, USA,” where Smith will compete against the nation’s best in pursuit of collegiate glory and further preparation for her Olympic aspirations.
