The St. Thomas women have reached a frustrating roadblock as new teams work tirelessly to recruit players. There was no shortage of action on St. Croix, however, as the St. Croix Kestrels and Champion Athletic Performance Academy took the field at Bethlehem Soccer Complex.
After a 15-minute weather delay, the eagerly anticipated matchup finally kicked off. CAPA captain, Jayda Browne, opened the scoring in the 11th minute, blindsiding the goalkeeper, Judah Acosta, with a close-range, right corner shot off an assist.
Kestrels’ Acacia Simmonds answered in the 28th minute to tie the match 1-1.
Smart plays and gritty defense kept the game tied through the half. At the 50-minute mark, Kestrels’ coach and former national team fixture, Claudia Lombard, edged past the defense to secure a 2-1 victory for the St. Croix Kestrels.
Lombard credits the success of the multigenerational team to a strong work ethic, teamwork, and genuine friendship.
