Eileen HannahMay Martin Dies at 93

Eileen HannahMay Martin, affectionately known to many as “Mommy” and “Miss Eileen,” peacefully departed this life on June 23, in Newnan, Georgia, at the age of 93.

Born on November 10, 1931, in Friths Village, Montserrat, Eileen built a life centered on faith, service, and unconditional love. She completed her high school education in Montserrat before moving to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, where she became a naturalized U.S. citizen and deeply rooted herself in the community.

Eileen devoted many years of service to the Government of the Virgin Islands as the dedicated Kitchen Manager at Alexander Henderson Elementary School. Through her work, she nourished generations of students, creating a warm and welcoming environment remembered fondly by all who passed through those cafeteria doors. Over the years, Eileen resided at 434 King Street in Frederiksted, Lorraine Village Apartments, and most recently at 395 Mount Pleasant. Wherever she called home, her kindness and hospitality touched countless lives. A devout member of Friedensberg Moravian Church, Eileen lived her faith daily through her service, generosity, and unwavering spirit. Her steadfast commitment to her church family and community was a testament to her loving and compassionate nature.

She’s preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Blake; father, Joe Martin; companion, Melvin A. Hodge; nephew/son, Franklin Gumbs; brothers, Samuel (Willie) Locker, Christopher Allen; sister, Lucille Greenaway Piper; daughter (deceased), Maude Akin. 

She’s survived by her immediate family, niece/daughter, Yolanda Greenaway; daughter, Maelyn Joel Hodge; granddaughter, Maelen Jewel Hodge Philogene; nieces, Francine Locker, Claudette Greenaway, Amorette (Mabel) Greenaway Warden, Bernadine Piper, Dulcey Daley, Condacy Ford; nephews, Don Locker, Douglas Aurthy, Howard Allen, Amberchell Allen; brother-in-law, Frank Piper; cousins, The Tuitt Family of Aruba, Christine Wise of Montserrat; godchildren, Timothy (Timmy) Daley, Craig; great nieces, Toshio Greenaway-French, Avonne Ford, Angelique Ford, Shermyra Gumbs, Chaigna Gumbs, Sheneek Daley, Shonda Daley; great nephews, Troy Piper, Lester Daley, Enga Gumbs, Hobson Gumbs; extended St. Croix Family, Grace Hodge; sister, Violet Williams; nieces, Celestine Blyden, Carensa Joseph, Yolande Joseph Brown, Joya Joseph, Mahalia Hanley, Juliette Williams; nephews, Clyde Williams, Charles Brown, Joshua Gordon Jr., Joshua Gordon Sr., Mitchell Hanley; special friends, Dorothy Joseph, Isabella Morton, Elizabeth Williams, Loyd Daley, Avonella Gore, Carmen Christian, David Hogan, Yvonne Springer, Joan Watley & Family, The Daniels Family, The Sweeney Family, The Hodge Family, The Williams Family, The Dublin Family; other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.

The viewing will be held on July 5 from 10 am to 12 pm at James Memorial Funeral Home, La Grande Princesse, St. Croix. The funeral service will be on July 7 at 10 am at Friedensberg Moravian Church. Interment will be at Frederiksted Cemetery immediately following the service. Please note: There will be no repast after the burial. The family kindly requests that all attendees wear traditional funeral attire out of respect for Eileen’s memory.

Eileen’s legacy of faith, service, and love will live on through the many lives she touched. May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace.
