Davis Matthias Gumbs Dies

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Davis Matthias Gumbs, a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and amazing grandfather who transitioned peacefully at home on May 19, 2025. 

He was preceded in death by his wife: Neuvie Gumbs; Siblings: Pastor Cyril Gumbs, Hewlett Gumbs, Gloria Smith, and Amos Gumbs.  

He is survived by his three loving children, Merida V. Gumbs, Minova V. Gumbs-Cherival and Malvern V. Gumbs; Grandchildren: Samara Cherival, S’Deja Maynard, Malik Gumbs, Shaynee Cherival, Shane Gumbs, Malachi Cherival, Karter Murray, K’Mala Gumbs; Son-in-Law: Samuel Cherival; Daughter-in-Law: Besha Liburd-Gumbs; Nieces: Varian Lawrence, Pamela Smith, Morvette Connor, Cyrilla Gumbs; Nephews: Joseph “Joey” Smith, Desmond Smith, Joshua Gumbs; Great Nieces: Atty. Natasha Baker, Jolene West, Aiesha Lake, Kamifa Lawrence, Wayneesha Carter, Arya Gumbs; Great Nephews: Rasheed Smith, Ashawn, Akeem, Kadeem, Kevron Lawrence, Akeem Sasso, Akarmus Carbon, Ezra Gumbs 

Great-Great Nieces: Jayla and J’Aime Smith, Ariana Lawrence, Lauren Baker; Great-Great Nephews: Jayden, Kaden and Aiden West; D’Noi and Joseph Smith, Lamar Baker; Sisters-in-Law: Rosalynd Gumbs, Cora Gumbs, Emily Lake, Mamrie Thomas; Brothers-in-Law: Rev. Dr. Bentley Thomas, Paul “Joko” Thomas, Jefferson Thomas; 

God Children: Joseph Vanterpool, Calvin “Paper” Vanterpool 

Special Caretaker/Adopted Son: Kevin Matthews

The first viewing will take place from 4 p.m to 6 p.m on Monday, June 16, at Turnbull’s Funeral Home and Crematory Services. The second viewing will take place from 9 a.m to 10 a.m on Tuesday, June 17 with service beginning 10:00 am at Calvary Baptist Church, Interment is at Eastern Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
