The Virgin Islands Office of Disaster Recovery and the Schneider Regional Medical Center have executed a contract for the demolition and reconstruction of the Myrah Keating-Smith Health Center.
The $990,500 contract awarded to Consigli/Benton Joint Venture 1 covers the preconstruction phase, which includes finalizing designs, conducting constructability reviews, and performing value engineering. This phase will extend over an eight-month period. Once the designs are complete, a notice to proceed will be issued for construction to begin on site. The project is expected to take approximately two years to complete.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are deeply grateful to see this important step toward restoring the Myrah Keating-Smith Clinic. The rebuild marks more than just construction- it signifies progress, hope, and our unwavering dedication to the health and well-being of the St. John Community,” said Virgin Islands Government Hospitals and Health Facilities Corporation Board Chairman, Dr. Jerry Smith.
The facility, closed due to damage from the 2017 hurricanes, still provides 24-hour emergency and outpatient services to residents and visitors through modulars funded by FEMA.
ODR Director Adrienne L. Williams-Octalien stated, “Reconstructing modern healthcare facilities that meet industry standards is one of the recovery’s top priorities.” The director added, “A resilient and dependable health care infrastructure is essential when faced with a disaster. We are thrilled to meet this point, with reconstruction on the horizon.”
The Myrah Keating-Smith Community Health Center was solicited as a part of the St. John mixed-sector bundle. It joins other awards for SRMC projects under the Rebuild USVI initiative, such as the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital on St. Thomas.
The Territorial Hospital Redevelopment Team and ODR’s Super PMO work closely together with other stakeholders to finalize design concepts to ensure the facility meets the needs of the community.
The Virgin Islands Office of Disaster Recovery remains committed to supporting the residents of the Virgin Islands through recovery and reconstruction efforts, ensuring a resilient and sustainable future for the Territory.
