Casino Control Commission Warns of False Online Gambling Ad

Virgin Islands News

The Virgin Islands Casino Control Commission is warning the public about a fraudulent social media advertisement that falsely claims online gambling is available through Divi Carina Bay Casino, a press release announced.

The ad, which illegally uses Divi Casino’s logos and the official seal of the Government of the Virgin Islands, promotes an “exclusive $1,500 welcome bonus” and says it is valid until Sept. 25 to mark the supposed “official launch” of online gambling at Divi, according to the press release.

“This advertisement is completely false,” VICCC Chair and Chief Executive Officer Marvin L. Pickering said in a statement. “Online gambling is not available at Divi Casino, one of the commission’s licensed operators. The commission has not issued any licenses for online gambling operations in the territory.”

Pickering said the commission has received numerous calls from concerned residents about the Facebook post. He praised Divi Casino for quickly posting a scam alert on its official page, clarifying that it does not offer online gambling and has no affiliation with the ad.

Both the commission and Divi Casino are urging the public not to click on links in the advertisement and not to provide any personal or financial information, the press release stated.

Pickering said he has contacted the Virgin Islands Justice Department, Attorney General’s Office, and the Gaming Enforcement Division to explore legal actions to remove the ad, identify those responsible, and protect the public.

He also thanked residents who reported the scam, noting that September is Responsible Gaming Education Month. “The legalized U.S. gambling industry, including the Commission, its partners, and its licensees, remains ever vigilant in safeguarding the public,” Pickering said. “Our goal is to ensure that patrons can play and enjoy gambling with trust and confidence.”

For more information, the commission asks the public to contact Executive Director Linda I. Smith at 340-718-3616 or by email at lsmith@casinocontrolcommission.vi.
