Charlotte Amalie High School (CAHS) Chicken Hawks B soared high above the other five teams competing in the Island Nation Baseball Cup held at the Kirwan Terrace Field on St. Thomas, over the weekend.
The Ivanna Eudora Kean High School (IEKHS) Dynamite Rays and two CAHS teams represented St. Thomas. The Barracudas of the St. Croix Educational Complex (SESC) and the Caribs of Central High School flew in from St. Croix. The Elmore Stout High School (EMSHS) Rams sailed in from the British Virgin Islands.
The six-team field featured CAHS A, SCEC, and ESHS in Pool A. CAHS B, CHS, and IEKHS competed in the second pool.
CAHS B was the only team to escape the pool-play round with a perfect 3-0 record. They faced the Rams of EMSHS in the first semi-finals. The Chicken Hawks pounded out 10 hits on their way to a 15-0 victory over the Rams. Di’John Rios, Malachi Warrell, and Clewddy Oganda Perez all tallied two hits each for CAHS. Torian Rosario was dominant on the mound, striking out eight of the nine batters he faced. Rosario got the win, while Devonte Henry collected the loss.
In the second semifinal, it was the battle of St. Croix. The Caribs jumped out to a five-run lead at the end of the first inning. The Barracudas responded by scoring six runs in the third. The game remained tied at eight until the final inning, when SECS Eliezer Ramirez stroked a triple to right field. D’Lanee Hassell followed with an RBI single, driving in Ramirez. After an intentional walk to O’Shea James, Dante James cleared the bases with a 2-run double. Central could only muster one run in the bottom of the frame, giving Complex the hard-fought 11-9 win.
The Championship Game placed CAHS B on the diamond against SCEC. The Hawks B Team finished the tournament strong with an 11-2 win over the Barracudas. James Boschulte recorded two of his team’s six hits for CAHS. Ramirez was the top hitter for the SCEC with three hits.
CAHS B’s Di’John Rios was named the tournament’s MVP and Best Defensive Player. Rios batted .533 for the tournament. He was also perfect on the field, committing no errors in 37 total chances. Torian Rosario was named Top Pitcher. He finished 2-0 with 14 strikeouts for CAHS B. His ERA for the event was .000. CAHS A’s Anthony Castillo hit .667 for the tournament, earning him the Top Batter Award.
