U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — Governor Albert Bryan Jr. has officially proclaimed the week of July 8–14, 2025, as French Heritage Week, and July 14, 2025, as Bastille Day in the U.S. Virgin Islands, in recognition of the lasting contributions and cultural legacy of the French community throughout the Territory.
“For generations, the French community—many of whom came to our shores from Guadeloupe, St. Barts, and St. Martin—has played an essential role in shaping the cultural, social, and economic fabric of our Virgin Islands,” Governor Bryan stated. “French Heritage Week is a time to honor that history and celebrate the traditions that continue to enrich our islands.”
The celebration, observed primarily on St. Thomas, brings hundreds of residents together in a vibrant display of pride and community. A highlight of the week’s festivities is the Northside Sportfishing Club’s Annual Bastille Day Kingfish Tournament, one of the territory’s most popular fishing events, held at scenic Hull Bay. The tournament draws numerous anglers and vessels from across the region and serves as a centerpiece of the celebration.
The Governor’s proclamation also honors Bastille Day, commemorated on July 14 to mark the storming of the Bastille fortress in Paris in 1789—an act that ignited the French Revolution and came to symbolize the triumph of liberty over tyranny. “We recognize Bastille Day as a powerful symbol of the courage and determination of the French people, whose fight for freedom resonates with the same values we hold dear in our Virgin Islands,” said Governor Bryan.
“Let us use this week not only to celebrate French culture and heritage, but also to recognize the important role the French community continues to play in the settlement, development, and diversity of the Virgin Islands,” the Governor added.
Governor Bryan encourages all Virgin Islanders to participate in French Heritage Week activities and to reflect on the values of liberty, cultural pride, and community spirit that these events represent.
