Virgin Islands chef featured at Miami festival

A Virgin Islands chef recently shared the flavours of the territory during a culinary event held last month in Miami.

Kenneth Molyneaux was featured as part of the BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission’s sponsorship of the 19th annual Deering Seafood Festival on April 13 at the Deering Estate.

During the event, he hosted a cooking demonstration for more than 150 people, who received a step-by-step lesson on preparing the VI’s national dish, fish and fungi, organisers said.

The festival also featured food, drinks and demonstrations from south Florida restaurants and suppliers. But Mr. Molyneaux, a former Taste of the Caribbean Chef of the Year (2017) and owner of Tropical Fusion in Long Bay, was the only international chef featured this year, according to the BVITBFC.

“In addition to Chef Ken’s unforgettable demo, the BVI booth drew steady crowds with its authentic island offerings,” the agency stated in a press release. “Attendees enjoyed freshly made saltfish fritters and the BVI’s iconic Painkiller cocktail, creating a flavourful escape to the Caribbean right in the heart of Miami.”

The VI delegation was coordinated by Shaekhoya Matthew, the BVITBFC’s business development manager for the southeast United States, and Perla George, its North American business development director.

“We are incredibly proud of our participation as title sponsor of the Deering Seafood Festival,” said Tourism Director Clive McCoy. “This event allowed us to authentically share the spirit of the British Virgin Islands — our food, our people, our culture — with a new audience of travel and culinary enthusiasts.”

He added that the response from attendees was “overwhelming.”

“We look forward to welcoming many of these new friends to our shores soon,” Mr. McCoy said.

The venue

The Deering Estate, the former home of the late American businessman and philanthropist Charles Deering, is now a museum complex situated on a 444-acre property owned by the state of Florida.
