The Virgin Islands Lottery has issued another an update on its ongoing closure, stating that operations remain suspended as it continues to recover from a recent cyberattack that significantly disrupted its systems. The disruption was first announced over a month ago on March 17, sparking concern over the scope of the cyberattack. To date, VIL has not disclosed details about the nature of the breach or the specific steps required for full recovery.
According to a statement released by Executive Director Raymond J. Williams, the agency is approaching the final stages of recovery. The current focus is on completing audits of the last 10 draws, after which the data will be uploaded into the VIL’s Point of Sale (POS) system. Once that step is completed, the organization will enter a critical “test phase” to ensure system integrity and accuracy. It was not clear whether VIL was referring to a new system altogether.
“This process has taken us longer than we had anticipated as this process is very tedious,” the statement reads. “We have to ensure that the information is 100% accurate.” In the interest of transparency and to avoid setting inaccurate expectations, the agency will not project a specific reopening date until it is certain one can be met, VIL said.
Plans are in place to resume operations with the completion of draw number 1047 one day after the system reopens. Shortly thereafter, ticket sales for draw number 1048 will resume. The agency noted that it has already printed the remaining unsold tickets for draw 1048, which were held back due to the cyberattack.
Acknowledging the inconvenience caused to its patrons, dealers, and partners, the VIL expressed deep appreciation for the public’s continued patience and understanding. “Please know that this situation is being treated with the utmost seriousness, and our top priority is to resume service in a way that is both secure and reliable,” the statement adds.
Executive Director Williams closed the statement by thanking the agency’s employees for their dedication and professionalism throughout the recovery process, crediting them for playing a crucial role in advancing efforts to restore full operations.
