Starting June 1, the stretch of Main Street between Joes Hill and Flemming Street will accommodate two-way traffic, according to Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer.
The plan is part of broader efforts to reduce congestion in Road Town, which also include road resurfacing, drainage repairs and safety improvements, Mr. Rymer told the House of Assembly last Thursday.
Such measures, he said, are designed to address ongoing traffic challenges observed since a major reorganisation of Road Town traffic flows in June 2020.
“While we have seen improvements to the traffic flow, certain areas — particularly the junction of Flemming Street and Fishlock Road — still experience significant congestion during peak hours,” he said.
He added that the number of licensed vehicles in the territory has surged from about 17,350 in 2020 to around 19,500 in 2024, adding pressure to the road infrastructure.
“To address this, the two-way traffic configuration will be applied to the stretch between the Road Town Methodist Church burial ground at Joes Hill and the intersection of Main Street and Flemming Street near the E.A. Creque building,” he said.
Businesses in the area have been informed that street-side parking will be prohibited to facilitate the new traffic flow and ensure safety, according to the minister.
