Speaker leads workshop at regional conference

Measures are needed to help ensure that female leaders don’t have to fear for their safety because of online abuse, Speaker of the House of Assembly Corine George-Massicote said while leading a workshop at a regional meeting in Barbados this month.

The workshop — themed “Debate Not Hate: Not Accepting Abuse as an Outcome of Free Speech” — was part of the programming at the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference held in Bridgetown from Oct 5-12.

During her remarks, Ms. George-Massicote emphasised the need to address technology-facilitated violence against female leaders, according to government.

“Women often resign from leadership roles out of fear for their safety, and girls who witness online abuse directed at women leaders hesitate to enter public life,” she said. “As a result, societies lose the full benefit of women’s voices in shaping policy and progress.”

To confront the issue, she recommended a multi-faceted approach.

“First, it is crucial to empower women with digital literacy, privacy tools and support networks, recognising that online safety is essential for equal participation,” Mr. George-Massicote said. “Second, legal frameworks must be updated to address the gendered nature of online abuse and to overcome jurisdictional barriers that hinder effective action.”

Meanwhile, she added, survivor voices should be amplified, and parliaments and women’s caucuses should push to keep technology-facilitated violence high on national agendas; advocate for stronger cyber laws and enforcement; hold social media platforms accountable; and provide resources for victim support and training.

Opposition member Mitch Turnbull, who also attended the conference, praised the welcome speech delivered by Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley during the opening ceremony.

“The prime minister urged parliaments and world leaders, including the United Nations, to pay close attention to global developments,” Mr. Turnbull said. “Most importantly, she reminded the gathering, especially small island nations, of the need to unite, build on shared strengths, and create the wealth and resilience their people deserve.”

He added that the conference provided a valuable platform for parliamentarians to “collaborate, reflect and strengthen their commitment to advancing good governance, sustainability and equity” across the Commonwealth.

Support services

In a press release about the conference, the HOA pledged to continue providing support services for HOA members and informing the public about the parliamentary procedures.
