ST. THOMAS — A burglary report in the early hours of Sunday morning ended in tragedy when police officers responding to the scene shot and killed a man in Frenchman’s Bay.

According to the V.I. Police Department, Central Dispatch received a call around 3:30 a.m. from a woman reporting that a burglary was in progress at her residence. Officers were dispatched to the home, where they encountered a male suspect on the property.
During the encounter, at least one officer discharged a department-issued firearm, striking the suspect. Emergency Medical Services were immediately called to the scene to provide aid. Despite efforts to save him, the man was pronounced dead at 4:12 a.m. by EMS personnel.
The deceased was later identified by next of kin as 36-year-old Tyler Simpson of Seattle, Washington.
The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy, while an active investigation into the shooting is underway.
“The Virgin Islands Police Department extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Tyler Simpson. This is a difficult time for everyone involved,” the department said in a statement.
