Premier on three-country trip

New York, Brazil and St. Vincent and the Grenadines are on Premier Natalio “Sowande” Wheatley’s itinerary during a 12-day trip to attend three meetings.

On Sunday, he headed to New York to attend the C-24 Conference, a meeting of the United Nations’ Special Committee on Decolonisation.

“The committee examines the situation in non-self-governing territories, hears views from various stakeholders, and adopts draft resolutions for the [UN] General Assembly,” according to government. “The C-24 also considers issues related to decolonisation and updates on the progress towards self-determination for each territory.”

After that conference wrapped up on Tuesday, Mr. Wheatley headed to Brazil for the Caribbean Development Bank Heads of Government Conference, which got under way yesterday and is scheduled to continue to Saturday.

“The CDB will convene the 55th annual meeting of its board and bring together regional leaders, international partners and development experts to chart a path toward institutional resilience, economic competitiveness and inclusive growth for its borrowing member countries,” government stated.

The meeting is themed “Building the Future: Resilient Institutions for a Greener, Stronger and Inclusive Caribbean,” and its agenda was designed to address the Caribbean’s most pressing development challenges, according to government.

OECS meeting

Upon leaving Brazil, the premier will travel to St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Authority Heads of Government meeting from Monday through June 20.

The session will focus on regional integration and “the changing international environment’s” economic impact on the Caribbean, according to government.

“Attending these meetings is always an invaluable opportunity,” Mr. Wheatley said before his departure. “They allow us to learn from the experiences of our regional colleagues and adopt strategies that can drive progress here in the Virgin Islands. It is about advancing our territory and ensuring that our people remain at the centre of our development agenda.”

Acting premier

Deputy Premier Julian Fraser also left the territory on Sunday on official duty travel, and he will return Sunday, government stated.

In their absence, Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer was appointed to carry out the functions of premier from Sunday through next Sunday.
