One impaled by anchor in boat wreck

A recent boat wreck near Virgin Gorda’s Gun Creek left two people injured, including one who was impaled by an anchor during impact, officials said.

The wreck, which took place at about 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, involved a 15-foot Boston Whaler that reportedly collided with Clark Rock near North Sound while heading to Gun Creek, according to a press release issued last Thursday by the Marine Safety Investigation and Reporting Authority.

“Both people on board sustained injuries, with one individual suffering serious injuries after being impaled by an anchor during the impact,” the agency stated. “Swift response efforts from the Virgin Islands Search and Rescue resulted in the prompt recovery and medical evacuation of the occupants.”

The agency also warned about the navigational hazards presented by Clark Rock, a partially submerged rock formation with limited visibility, especially at high tide.

Though the rock is charted, it remains dangerous for vessels and people unfamiliar with the area, according to the MSIRA.

“It’s important to acknowledge the significance of safe navigation and the need for increased caution when operating vessels at night, particularly in areas with hazards or limited visibility,” said Chief Marine Safety Investigator Jerome Padmore.

“Mariners are advised to navigate cautiously, keep a proper lookout, and use updated navigational charts.”

The agency’s ongoing investigation, he said, aims to identify safety lessons rather than assign blame or liability.

The MSIRA added that a “shortened report” on the wreck will be published.
