March against cancer gets big support

Combatting cancer came to the fore over the weekend as more than 200 people took part in a fundraising march to fight the disease.

The annual CIBC Caribbean Walk for the Cure in Road Town on Saturday boosted the cause to raise cash for people fighting to overcome the trauma of the illness.

Town to Sea Cows Bay

The walk, held in conjunction with the BVI Cancer Society, started at the bank’s Wickhams Cay branch, and then went along the seafront route to the well in Sea Cows Bay.

“Each step we take in partnership with our sponsors and supporters reinforces our shared commitment to the fight against cancer, our courage to face its challenges, and our belief in the power of community to create meaningful change,” said Fabian Devonish, CIBC Caribbean head of country for the Virgin Islands.

$75k target

The Walk for the Cure is one of the largest cancer awareness and fundraising events across the Caribbean.

The initiative contributed to a target to raise $75,000 in the Virgin Islands to support cancer prevention, treatment and patient assistance programmes through the BVI Cancer Society.

BVI Cancer Society President Gloria Fahie praised the “spirit of togetherness” expressed in the walk.

“Our community continues to show incredible courage and compassion,” she said. “Every donation, every step and every show of support brings us closer to ensuring that no one faces cancer alone.”

Besides raising funds, Mr. Devonish said, the event was intended to inspire hope.

“The Walk for the Cure has grown exponentially since it was first launched in 2012,” he said. “The success is thanks to the continued support of businesses and organisations from the community who join us in helping to raise awareness and funds for a cause that affects us all.”
