Fair to feature books, art, food

The Virgin Islands Cultural Food Fair, Book and Art Expo will be held tomorrow as part of Culture and Tourism Month.

“This year’s theme, ‘Telling Our Story Through Tourism: Sharing Virgin Islands Legacies,’ invites us to reflect on the richness of the territory’s heritage and the ways in which they can share it with the world,” said Deputy Culture Director Anne Lennard.

The event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m., and guests will be treated to the songs by Zion Sounds and the 4 Strong fungi bands.
Visual artists and writers, meanwhile, will display their works and offer attendees the chance to explore their creativity.

Mr. Leonard added that the event is now a staple of Culture and Tourism Month.

“It also brings home the fact that the marrying of culture and tourism plays a key role in our visitors’ experience in addition to enhancing the knowledge of our communities through this partnership,” she said.

The event will also feature storytelling and the sale of foods, juices, candies and other traditional VI delicacies.

Handmade crafts, including straw hats, jewellery, mats and rugs made by local artisans, will be on sale, as will art by VI artists Frederick Blackett and Vincent “Bing” Malone.

Another highlight will be the Local Tart Competition hosted by Caribbean Insurers Ltd. Attendees will get a chance to sample and vote for their favourite tart.

The event was organised by the Department of Culture.
