The Environmental Protection Agency and the V.I. Department of Planning and Natural Resources are teaming up to host a series of workshops focusing on the maintenance of cisterns in the Virgin Islands. Open to the public, the workshops aim to educate residents on how to properly clean, protect, and maintain their cisterns, while addressing the unique water concerns of the territory.
The events will include both in-person and virtual sessions, ensuring accessibility for all residents:
- St. Croix Workshop: February 18, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the UVI NWW Building, Great Hall.
- St. Thomas Workshop: February 20, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Virgin Islands DPNR Office Conference Room (Tutu Park Mall, Suite 300, 2nd Floor).
- Virtual Zoom Workshop: February 27, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM USVI Time (5:00 PM to 7:00 PM EST).

According to the EPA and DPRN, participants will gain valuable insights into cistern maintenance, including:
- The importance of cleaning, protecting, and maintaining cisterns.
- Potential concerns related to cistern use in the Virgin Islands.
- An overview of water contaminants that can affect health.
- Ways to prevent and treat water contamination.
- Proper procedures for chlorine dosing.
- Case studies highlighting what to look for in cistern maintenance.
The workshops will also feature hands-on training and the distribution of chlorine test equipment, ensuring attendees leave with practical knowledge and tools to manage their cisterns effectively.
For the St. Croix event, attendees should enter through the campus’ main entrance on Palm Drive, take a left after the Medical Simulation Center, and proceed past a construction site to the last parking area. The St. Thomas workshop will take place at the DPNR office in Tutu Park Mall.
