ST. CROIX — The V.I. Department has launched an investigation after the body of a deceased female was discovered in an abandoned building in Christiansted town on Tuesday.
According to a statement from the VIPD, the 911 Emergency Call Center received a report at approximately 11:23 a.m. on April 1 from a concerned citizen who alerted authorities to a foul odor emanating from an abandoned residence located on Fisher Street.
When officers arrived on the scene, they located the body of a female in an advanced stage of decomposition inside the building. The cause of death is currently unknown and will be determined following an autopsy.
The VIPD’s Major Crime Unit is actively investigating the case. Authorities say the body has not yet been positively identified, and DNA testing will be used to confirm the identity of the deceased. Notification of the next of kin will follow once that confirmation is made.
The department is urging anyone with relevant information to contact the Major Crime Unit or the VIPD tip lines.
