James S. Gumbs Dies

With deep sorrow we announce the passing of Mr. James S. Gumbs on Sept. 16, 2025.   

He was formerly from the Island of Anguilla and was affectionately known as Evan or Toach. He resided on  the Island of St Thomas with his immediate family for the past 45 years.  

He is preceded in death by his son James Caleb Gumbs, his mother Anne Elizabeth Gumbs and His Father George Brooks and His Sister Enid Richardson

He is survived by his wife Eda Stuart- Gumbs, His Children, Nola Stuart (Betty), Grace Gumbs, Rosina Stuart (MaryLou), Morris Suart (Peter), Clyde Gumbs (Danny). Evan is also survived by Fourteen Grandchildren and Seven Great Grandchildren.

His Brother Eustace Brooks (Rushie), His Sister Una Proctor,

His extended family and friends are too numerous to mention, to include family members and friends on the Islands of St Croix, St Maarten, St. Thomas, St Kitts, St John, The British Virgin Islands, and The Dominican Republic.  The United States of America and Great Britain.

Funeral Arrangements to be conducted by Turnbull Funeral Home on St Thomas are as follows, 

There will be a viewing on the 24th of October at 4pm- 6pm at Turnbull Funeral Home.

The Church Service on the 25th of October at St Andrews Anglican on St. Thomas.

Moran’s Alternative Affordable Funeral Home will be conducting the Funeral Arrangements for the family on Anguilla.

Evan’s final resting place will be in Anguilla on the 8th day November 2025

The Church Service will be at The Ebenezer Methodist Church, in the Valley, followed by his burial in the Ebenezer Methodist Cemetery.

Professional services are entrusted to Turnbull’s Funeral Home.
