Court Facilities Close Across Virgin Islands Due to Severe Weather

The Virgin Islands court system suspended in-person operations on Thursday morning because of deteriorating weather conditions.

Administrator of Courts Regina Petersen announced that court facilities closed at 9:00 a.m. on September 18, with all non-essential employees released after reporting for duty at 8:00 a.m. Essential emergency response staff were also excused once the buildings were secured.

Normal operations are expected to resume at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, September 19, though officials cautioned that further updates would be issued if conditions do not improve as anticipated.

The Judiciary reminded the public that while physical court facilities are closed, electronic filing in the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands remains unaffected. Individuals can continue to access basic case information through the court’s online public access portal. Citations may also be paid electronically via the online payment system.

Members of the Virgin Islands Bar Association and the public were encouraged to monitor official updates for any changes to the reopening schedule. Administrator Petersen underscored that the court is committed to maintaining essential access to information and services during the weather-related closure.

For further information, residents may contact the Office of the Administrator of Courts in St. Thomas.
