Cops crush seized scooters

In their latest effort to foil crime, police have started destroying confiscated motorbikes instead of auctioning them off to community members.

The “bold step,” police said, will apply to unclaimed and illegally operated bikes and scooters that are no longer required as evidence.

“Traditionally, once seized bikes or scooters were unclaimed for a period, they were auctioned to the public,” according to a Friday statement from the Police Information Office. “However, this approach has led to an unfortunate trend: Many of the same bikes resurface on the roads in violation of traffic and safety regulations, ultimately being re-seized by officers.”

This cycle, police said, burdens police resources and crowds the Road Town Police Station compound.

Dozens of bikes

Starting on April 28, dozens of motorbikes were removed from the station with the help of the Department of Waste Management, police said.

“This move underscores our commitment to road safety and accountability,” said acting Police Commissioner Jacqueline Vanterpool. “We can no longer allow our compound to become a revolving door for illegal bikes. By taking this action, we are sending a strong message to those who choose not to follow the law.”

Police are urging all motorbike owners to ensure their vehicles are licensed, insured and roadworthy.
