Cancer Society warns about WhatsApp scam

Fraudsters posing as the BVI Cancer Society have been using WhatsApp to solicit money from residents, the non-profit organisation warned recently.

“We have received multiple reports from community members who were contacted by individuals falsely claiming to represent our organisation,” the BVICS stated in a Jan. 11 press release. “These scammers are reportedly inviting individuals to Zoom calls or making false claims related to our bingo fundraising events.”

Describing the ruse as “deeply concerning,” the organisation affirmed its commitment to keeping the public informed and protected.

As part of that effort, it explained its policies, noting that it does not use WhatsApp to send invitations to Zoom meetings or promote events.

“Official information about our activities, including fundraising events, is shared exclusively through our verified channels: our website, social media Facebook page, and trusted community partners,” the release stated. “We never request personal information or financial contributions through WhatsApp.”

Fighting back

Anyone who receives a suspicious message claiming to be from the BVI Cancer Society is urged to avoid engaging, clicking on links, or providing any personal information.

“Verify with us,” the society advised. “Contact the BVI Cancer Society directly to confirm whether the message is legitimate.”

Residents are also asked to report the scam to the police by calling 311.

“We are deeply troubled that scammers are exploiting our name and reputation in this way,” the BVICS stated. “Our focus remains on supporting the community through cancer awareness, prevention and care, and we ask for your assistance in stopping this fraudulent activity.”
