Governor Albert Bryan Jr. announced Monday that the government will soon distribute $10 million in tax refunds to Virgin Islanders, offering timely financial relief as the federal shutdown continues to strain household budgets across the territory.
“I want to speak directly to the households that are feeling the strain of this federal shutdown,” Governor Bryan said during an afternoon press briefing from Government House. “Many of you are stretching every dollar you have…. Getting these refunds out the door now provides just a little help with the essentials for so many of our families.”
The payments will benefit more than 3,300 taxpayers, according to the governor, who said the move serves both as a short-term boost for families and a step toward fulfilling his administration’s pledge to bring tax refund payments fully up to date.
Governor Bryan described the latest issuance as “another step forward” in the administration’s ongoing effort to eliminate the backlog of income tax refunds. He added that, if all continues according to plan, the government expects to be current on tax refund payments before the next tax date.
